Vincent van Gogh began drawing and painting seriously only after church authorities dismissed him from missionary work in 1880 for giving away all his worldly possessions. “They think I’m a madman because I wanted to be a true Christian,” he said. The works for which he is most famous he painted in the last three years of his life.
