Jane Addams

(1860 - 1935)

Jane Addams opened America’s first settlement house in Chicago’s slums in 1889 and recruited educated women like her to live among the poor they served. “Nothing could be worse than the fear that one had given up too soon,” she wrote, “and left one unexpended effort that might have saved the world.”
