Jacob Burckhardt

(1818 - 1897)

Unhampered by the demands of marriage and family, the lifelong bachelor Jacob Burckhardt made many trips from his native Switzerland to Italy between 1837 and 1883. In 1860 he wrote The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy, the work establishing him as one of the first and greatest of the cultural historians.
