Cennino Cennini
(c. 1360 - c. 1426)
A late Gothic painter, Cennino Cennini worked in the tradition of Giotto, though none of his paintings have survived. His Il libro dell’arte (The Craftman’s Handbook) offered practical and theoretical advice to young painters. Cennini argued that painting, which he believed combines theory and imagination with physical skill, deserves an elevated place among human occupations.
