At the age of nineteen, the abstemious Congregationalist preacher Jonathan Edwards boasted of being “much more sprightly and healthy, both in body and mind, for my self-denial…It would be advantageous every morning to consider my business and temptations…and to make a resolution how…to avoid those sins.”
