Atul Gawande

Brooklyn-born surgeon and staff writer for The New Yorker, Atul Gawande was a health-policy adviser to the Clinton campaign and administration from 1992 to 1993. Shortly after “The Cost Conundrum” appeared, President Barack Obama cited the article while talking with Senate Democrats; a week later he summoned his aides to the Oval Office to discuss it.
