Naguib Mahfouz

(1911 - 2006)

Employed in the Egyptian civil service from 1934 to 1971, Naguib Mahfouz published his Cairo Trilogy in the mid-1950s. In 1988 he became the first Arab to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Mahfouz died at the age of ninety-four in his hometown of Cairo in 2006.
