John G. Neihardt

(1881 - 1973)

While researching a cycle of epic poems about the American West, John G. Neihardt interviewed Black Elk about the Ghost Dance of the Sioux. The Lakota healer invited Neihardt back to record more of his life and vision; the writer returned in 1930 with his daughters Enid and Hilda to transcribe weeks of interviews.
