Frederick W. Taylor in suit and tie

Frederick W. Taylor

(1856 - 1915)

In The Principles of Scientific Management, his paean to “national efficiency,” Frederick W. Taylor wrote, “In the past the man has been first; in the future the system must be first.” In Yevgeny Zamyatin’s We, the original dystopian novel, the oppressively standardized One State is founded largely on Taylor’s principles.
