Jamaica Kincaid

Jamaica Kincaid traveled from Antigua in 1966 to work as an au pair in Scarsdale, New York. She did not write letters home to her mother, nor did she send money. “If I hadn’t become a writer,” she said, “I don’t know what would have happened to me; that was a kind of self-rescuing.”
