Groucho Marx

(1890 - 1977)

It is said that the Marx brothers—in order of their births, Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Gummo, and Zeppo—received their stage names during a card game. In a twenty-year period, Chico, Harpo, and Groucho appeared in thirteen films, among them Animal Crackers, Duck Soup, and A Night at the Opera. Groucho reportedly resigned from the Friars Club with a note reading, “I don’t want to belong to any club that would have me as a member.” He hosted the television show You Bet Your Life from 1950 to 1961.
